Book of Dead is the classic high-volatility “book” slot: 10 paylines, an expanding special symbol, and free spins where all of the win potential lives. The demo above plays with identical math to the real game, so use it to feel the swings before any money is involved.

How the game works

Rich Wilde spins across a 5x3 Egyptian grid with 10 fixed paylines. The book symbol is both wild and scatter. Land three or more books anywhere and you trigger 10 free spins, and this is where the game is decided.

Before the free spins start, one regular symbol is chosen at random as the expanding symbol. During the bonus, that symbol stretches to cover its whole reel and pays like a scatter, meaning it doesn’t need to line up on a payline. Free spins can retrigger.

Why the expanding symbol decides everything

The gap between a dead bonus and a screen-filling win is which symbol the game picks. Low-value card symbols expand often but pay little. Draw the explorer himself, the top symbol, and five expanded reels pay 5,000x your line stake. That single mechanic is why the game is famous and why it is brutally streaky: you can trigger several bonuses in a row that pay almost nothing, then one that pays hundreds of times your bet.

The demo is the honest way to experience this. Give it 200 spins of play money and watch how long the dry stretches actually run. If that pattern would stress your real bankroll, this is not your game, and it is better to learn that for free.

RTP honesty check

The number everyone quotes, 96.21%, is the default build. Play’n GO also sells reduced-RTP versions to operators, and plenty of casinos run them. The demo uses the default; the casino you pick might not. Open the in-game info screen at the casino and check the figure before depositing. If you’re not sure how to read it, our RTP guide walks through it.

The bottom line

Book of Dead is a beautifully simple slot with one big idea: everything rides on the free spins and which symbol expands. Play the demo until the volatility stops surprising you, verify the RTP version at your casino, and only then decide if it deserves real money.

When you are ready for real bets, pick the casino by its payout record, not its bonus size - our honest casino reviews rank sites on exactly that.
